Frequently Asked Questions

The practical questions,
answered honestly.

Everything else — dates, pace, tastes — is a conversation. Start one here.

Do I need a visa to visit China?

Most Western passports — including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and most of the EU — can currently enter China visa-free for stays of up to 30 days. Policies evolve, so we confirm the latest rules for your passport as part of planning, at no charge.

Is China safe for tourists?

China is among the safest major travel destinations in the world, with very low rates of violent crime. Solo travelers, families with children and three-generation groups all travel comfortably. On a Kindred China journey you also have a private guide with you and a 24/7 concierge on call.

Do your guides speak English?

Yes. Every journey is led by a private, fluent English-speaking guide. On Heritage Journeys we additionally provide an interpreter for village days, where local dialects matter.

How do payments work?

A deposit confirms your journey — payable by international bank transfer, PayPal or Wise — with the balance due before travel. On the ground, everything listed in your itinerary is prepaid. We also help you set up mobile payments (Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept foreign cards) for personal spending.

When is the best time to visit China?

April to June and September to October are the sweet spots almost everywhere. Regional exceptions are worth planning around: the Western Epic is best outside high summer, and the Songs of the Mountains journey is at its richest during Miao New Year (Nov–Dec) and Sisters' Meal Festival (April).

Will my phone, WhatsApp and Gmail work in China?

Yes, with the right setup. International roaming and travel eSIMs keep WhatsApp, Gmail, Instagram and Google Maps working normally. We send every guest a short connectivity guide before departure so nothing is a surprise.

Can you handle dietary requirements?

Yes — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher-style and allergies are all workable with notice, including at the family kitchens and village feasts on our journeys. Tell us once, and every restaurant on your route knows before you sit down.

How far in advance should we book?

Three to six months ahead is ideal — it secures the hotels and the people (researchers, master craftsmen, special-cave permits) that make these journeys what they are. Festival-timed departures deserve more lead time. Shorter notice is sometimes possible; ask.
